Frequently Asked Questions

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a 'Subscriber Identification Module' that has been embedded on the circuit board of your device. The credentials that are normally stored on a removable plastic SIM card are now downloaded over the internet and stored directly in your phone/tablet/laptop/smart watch.

A common misconception about eSIM is it's only for travellers and only offers data.

Truth is, eSIM is fast becoming the norm across the board. Many providers around the world are also offering eSIM for local subscribers, complete with calling, text/sms, and ID registration. Don't worry, Simunye Mobile does not require ID/eKYC.

How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?

Enter *#06# on your phone's native dial pad. If you see a 32 digit EID, your device supports eSIM.

Or:

iPhone: Settings > Mobile Service > Add eSIM.

Android: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Add eSIM.

If you don't see 'Add eSIM' in both cases, your device is not compatible.

What is your Fair Use Policy?

We only have a FUP on our unlimited plans, and it's pretty simple:

You can use a set amount at full speed, in the case of all the 30 day plans, this is 60 GB. After that, you are limited to 2Mbps until the end of the plan.

2Mbps is still enough for VoIP calls, email, general browsing and music streaming. Maybe some SD video streaming.

Basically, you do not have to worry about being throttled on a daily basis to some unspecified speed after only a small amount of usage.

So feel free to do 10GB worth of Zoom calling, live broadcasting and downloading on the same day.

There is no limit on how much you can hotspot / tether, on any of our plans. You can use the whole bundle.

How much data do I need?

If you're not sure or you don't want to think about it you can always get one of our unlimited plans. See the FUP in each unlimited plan. It varies along with number of days.

But when it comes to fixed cap plans; 10GB for 30 days is generally good for things such as Google Maps, checking email, general browsing, even Whatsapp audio calling and syncing some of your media to cloud storage.

Where you might need more is when you watch a lot of video, broadcast live, video calling etc.

What also helps to economise data use is to not allow too much photo/video syncing to cloud storage while on mobile data. Also avoid app and OS updates. Save that for WiFi.

Do you have short term plans?

Yes, we do have some 7 & 15 day plans, but only in select locations.

This is because our 30 day plans offer the best value for money, the 7 & 15 day plans being only marginally cheaper.

When do your plans activate?

Automatically on arrival, if your Simunye Mobile eSIM is enabled and connected to a local partner network.

If you'd like to delay activation after arrival, simply don't toggle your Simunye Mobile eSIM on.

No, the clock does not start ticking if you buy a plan for Spain while still in the USA. So you may go ahead, scan the QR and install the eSIM, and you will pick up a local USA network, but the Spain plan will not activate until you get to Spain.

After purchase you have 6 months to start using a plan. But don't worry, even if you only activate and start using a plan 2 days before the initial 6 months, you will still be able to use it for the duration of the plan itself. In the meantime, you may purchase and use any other Simunye Mobile plans, on the same eSIM.

If you do not use a plan within 6 months, it does not auto activate, it simply goes away. You may only request a refund for unused plans within 14 days from purchase.

Bear in mind that if you buy a regional or global plan and you are in any of the covered countries, your plan will activate immediately, if your Simunye Mobile eSIM is enabled and connected to a local network.

All activate/expiry times are UTC. In other words, if you activate a 30 day plan at 10am(UTC), it will expire at exactly 10am(UTC) 30 days later, no matter where you go in the meantime; London, Vancouver, Dubai, Tokyo, makes no difference.

Do I need a new eSIM in every country?

After you have finished your first plan, do not delete the eSIM. You can re-use the same eSIM profile in all Simunye Mobile destinations. Just buy the appropriate plan and it will be added to your existing eSIM.

Does Simunye Mobile have an app?

No, we do not.

This is because our product is just a simple connection to the internet. We are not a full service telco provider.

So feel free to save the web URL of your Simunye user account to the home screen of your phone for easy future access. Your Simunye user dashboard will then behave just like an app.

Or create a bookmark in your mobile browser.

You can of course also easily manage your Simunye Mobile account via the web on your laptop or phablet.

Can I manage more than one eSIM in the same account?

No, unfortunately not.

You will need to log out and create a separate account with a different email for each eSIM, but you may use the same payment method and billing address.

However, we do allow unlimited hot-spot use, in that you can use your whole bundle while tethered. This means if you're travelling in a group or you have multiple devices you can easily share your data.

Can I keep using my home mobile number?

You certainly can, if your phone supports dual-sim/esim, which many modern phones do.

Just be sure to set your Simunye Mobile eSIM as the one that will be used for data.

You then leave your home mobile number enabled for text and/or calls while being aware of any roaming charges your home operator might charge you for text and calls when abroad.

On the other hand, many providers offer international WiFi Calling, meaning you can use your home plan on WiFi anywhere in the world, and you continue paying your home rates. Just check their polices as some only allow WiFi Calling in your home country.

How fast is a Simunye Mobile eSIM?

Your speed will vary as you move around, no matter which type of SIM you have in your device. This will happen while using any terrestrial mobile network in the world, especially when deep inside a building, a mountainous area or as you go further out to sea.

Simunye Mobile operates on a tier-1 internet backbone which essentially gives you the same priority and speed as a local SIM.

Top-tip: Avoid running too many Speedtests. They will eat your data plan in no time. We're talking as much as 1GB, in 5 seconds, in some places with good 5G.

Can I switch eSIMs between devices?

Yes.

You can switch devices by first deleting the Simunye Mobile (Transatel) eSIM from the old device, then you simply scan the same QR code with the new device.

However, before deleting your eSIM, you need to make sure your device is connected to WiFi or has an active data connection from another SIM or eSIM. This allows the deletion to be confirmed with our provisioning system.

Just bear in mind that while we can accommodate occasional device switches, our upstream provider limits how often this can be done — not to be difficult, but because unlimited switching is a known fraud and abuse risk that ultimately affects data costs and network quality for everyone.

So please, if you could avoid switching devices unnecessarily, that would be great. Because after the 5th install, if you delete the eSIM and there is still an active plan attached to it, you will unfortunately forfeit any remaining data.

On the other hand, if your eSIM has no data plan and you have reached the limit of 5 re-installs, please get in touch and we will remove that profile from your user account. This is so you can use the same email/account for a fresh eSIM, as we currently only support one eSIM per user account.

Can I run multiple plans at the same time?

Yes, you can.

In other words, you can buy a plan for Spain, then using the same account you can buy a plan for France which will then just be added to the same eSIM as Spain.

The plans will then auto-activate once you enter each country, and should you cross between the countries more than once, you will just use the respective plan.

What IP address will I get?

Considering you will be using the same eSIM in all locations, you may be forgiven for thinking you'll use the same IP all the time, as you would with a plan purchased from your home provider.

At this time we route a lot of traffic through the UK if you have an African plan, but when in regions like Europe you will usually have a local country IP/breakout. If not, traffic will be routed through another nearby country. No, we do not route traffic through Hong Kong, if you're in Europe.

We personally tested this; in Belgium we had a Brussels IP, but when we crossed into Luxembourg we were switched to a Luxembourg City IP.

So yes, even though you will be using the same eSIM over the Transatel core network, your IP will change as you move between countries.

And even then, things are constantly evolving, changing. Networks are built out and routes change. We do our best to keep you informed, as fast as this kind of tech keeps changing.

With that said, should you need to use a specific dedicated country IP no matter where you are or would like even further protection, have a look at our affiliate VPN partner: (We will earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you, but only if you sign up for any of their services)

How secure are your payments?

Extremely secure. We use Stripe as a 3rd party payment processor. They are pretty much the best at what they do.

Where is my data stored?

For the record, we at Simunye Mobile do not store your actual credit card number.

When it looks like you are filling in those details on our website/server, you are actually using a modal that is a direct secure connection with Stripe.

What Stripe sends back to us is simply confirmation you paid, and the actual money, nothing more.

What we do store on our secure server in The Netherlands is just your billing address, email and order history. That's it.

Do you offer 5G?

Yes, we do, where locally available and for no extra charge.

However, there is a slight catch; 5G can use significantly more battery power. But this is not a problem if you're hot-spotting and have access to a mains power source, like at our office in Genk where we get up to 600Mbps on 5G. No, we do not limit hot-spot usage. You may use your whole bundle.

Also bear in mind that while you may switch local networks, not all networks in a given country support our 5G. Such as in Belgium only BASE and in South Africa only MTN offers 5G for our eSIMs.

If you're on a boat or ship off the coast of Mossel Bay in South Africa, MTN have collaborated with ZTE to push 5G up to 20km off shore.

So when you're out and about, we suggest you set your phone to use LTE only, unless you know for a fact you need the extra speed.

Who is Transatel?

They are our core network provider who in turn rent radio access from local operators like MTN, T-Mobile, Orange, Vodafone etc.

So when you install an eSIM purchased from Simunye Mobile, your phone will notify you that you are about to install an eSIM from Transatel.

Why is the network ID just 'eSIM'?

This is because we are in the process of setting our network to show 'Simunye Mobile'. This configuration takes some time.

In the meantime, you will still be able to choose between local networks in many countries. These local networks are shown in all plans.

Do you notify about low data?

No, we don't.

Most people end up disabling push notifications or they don't notice them nor the email until it's too late.

So please feel free to regularly check your Simunye Mobile dashboard for the status of your data plan in real time.

Do you offer automatic top-ups?

No, because we've found that having auto top-ups actually creates more anxiety than simply running out of data. No one is too keen to get charged for data they don't need.

In the event you do run out of Simunye Mobile data, you only have to find any other internet connection for a quick purchase of another Simunye Mobile plan.

Do you cover Alaska?

No, we currently do not cover Alaska, not with any of our plans.

Our USA plans only cover the continental states below Canada, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and Hawaii.

There are sill huge swathes of land on this planet with zero terrestrial network coverage. This is because no one lives there so spending millions setting up infrastructure hardly anyone will use is pointless.

So, when an eSIM provider promises 'seamless coverage wherever you go', you may want to question how they do it. Unless they are a satellite provider like Iridium or Starlink, they are lying to you.

But even sat providers can't provide completely seamless coverage. There are laws of science and physics at play. Radio signals don't go through mountains, trees, buildings or thunder clouds very well.
